EU Trademark Registration (EUIPO): One Application, 27 Countries

EU trademark registration (EUTM) is the system that grants a trademark right valid in all 27 member states through a single application filed with the EUIPO. Export Partners is a team that handles clearance searches, class selection, filing and opposition monitoring for manufacturers and brands, working in the same plan as Brand Registry on Amazon Europe.

What are the EUIPO and the EU trade mark (EUTM)?

EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) is the EU's trademark and design office. A single application filed with the EUIPO, once registered, is valid at the same time in 27 countries, including Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands; no separate country-by-country filings are needed. The United Kingdom is not covered since it left the EU; a separate application is required for the UK.

A registration in your home country does not provide protection in the EU; trademark rights are territorial. For Brand Registry on Amazon Europe, a registration or a pending application number valid in the EU is required.

Who is it for?

Brands selling on Amazon Europe

Brand Registry, A+ content and listing protection on Amazon.de, .fr, .it and .es require an EU registration or application number.

Manufacturers exporting regularly to the EU

Securing protection in your own name before a buyer or distributor registers the mark in Europe.

Brands selling to the EU through their own e-commerce site

Outside marketplaces, a mark can also be registered by third parties; filing early protects your priority.

Brands whose product is not on sale yet

The EUIPO does not require proof of use; you can file before launch, and the use requirement begins 5 years after registration.

How does EUIPO trademark registration work in four steps?

01

Clearance search

We check the EUIPO and national registers (TMview) for identical or similar marks; any opposition risk is stated in writing up front.
02

Class and goods list

Goods and services classes are selected according to the Nice Classification; the first class is included in the base fee, additional classes are charged separately.
03

Filing and examination

The application is filed through the EUIPO portal and the fee is paid. The EUIPO examines formalities and absolute grounds for refusal; an accepted application is published in the bulletin.
04

Opposition period and registration

A 3-month opposition period runs from publication. If there is no opposition, the mark is registered; it is valid for 10 years and renewable.

The EUIPO official fee for an online application is 850 EUR for 1 class, 50 EUR for the second class, and 150 EUR for the third and each additional class (the current schedule published by the EUIPO; this page is updated if it changes). Our attorney and service fee is 550 EUR for the first two classes and 165 EUR for each additional class. Some countries offer export programs that may cover foreign trademark fees; see our export support page.

Amazon Europe and Brand Registry

On Amazon Europe, Brand Registry opens with a trademark registration valid in the EU or a pending EUIPO application. The Brand Registry file is prepared the same week the application number is received; A+ content, the brand store and listing protection can start before registration is granted. When planned together with VAT, LUCID and GPSR registrations for selling in Germany, the trademark application is completed before shipment; the sequence is in our guide to selling on Amazon Germany, and the account side in our Amazon service.

Why Export Partners?

EU, U.S. and UK in one plan

EUIPO, USPTO and UKIPO applications for the same mark on one timeline; the class list is built once and adapted to all three offices.

Together with Amazon

The trademark application is handled by the same team as your Amazon account setup and Brand Registry; you do not move files between two providers.

Office action and opposition monitoring

Every letter from the EUIPO is read and response deadlines are tracked; if an opposition is filed, your options are presented to you in writing.

Renewal reminders

The 10-year registration term and the 5-year use threshold are added to the calendar, and you are notified as deadlines approach.

Frequently asked questions

If no opposition is filed, it usually takes 4 to 6 months from filing to registration: 1 to 2 months for EUIPO examination, followed by a 3-month opposition period. Amazon Brand Registry does not require a completed registration; the application number is enough.

The EUIPO official fee for an online application is 850 EUR for one class; the second class is 50 EUR, and the third and each additional class is 150 EUR. The attorney and service fee is 550 EUR for the first two classes and 165 EUR for each additional class; the total for a single class is 1,400 EUR.

No. Trademark rights are territorial; a registration in your home country does not provide protection in the EU. It is also possible to designate the EU through the Madrid Protocol based on your national registration; which route fits best depends on your products and the number of countries, and is decided in the first meeting.

Yes. An EUTM registration is valid in all EU member states at the same time: one application, one fee, one renewal. If an absolute ground for refusal arises in one member state, the entire application can be affected, which is why the preliminary search matters.

No. The United Kingdom has been outside the EU since 2021; the UK requires a separate application with the UKIPO. We handle both applications within the same plan.

Yes. The EUIPO does not require proof of use at filing. If the mark is not put to genuine use in the EU within 5 years after registration, third parties may request revocation.

A completed registration is not required; a registered EU trademark or a pending EUIPO application is enough. Brand Registry can be opened with the application number, and the file is updated once registration is complete.

Applicants based outside the EU need an authorized representative in the EU for representation before the EUIPO during opposition and examination stages. The application is filed under our coordination through an authorized EU representative.

The class is chosen based on the goods and services the mark will be used for (Nice Classification, 45 classes). A product sold on Amazon and its packaging or accessories may fall into different classes; we determine this in the preliminary search based on your product list.

10 years, renewable indefinitely. We add renewal dates to the calendar and send reminders.
