Trademark Registration: USA, European Union, United Kingdom and Canada

Trademark registration is the process of protecting a brand name and logo in a target country through an application filed with that country's trademark office; because trademark rights are territorial, a registration in your home country does not provide protection abroad. Export Partners is an Amazon SPN Verified team that handles trademark applications and Amazon Brand Registry enrollment in the USA, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada on behalf of manufacturers.

Which country should you register in?

Trademark registration in the USA

The USPTO application is filed through a licensed U.S. trademark attorney. With the application serial number, Brand Registry can be opened on Amazon US.

Trademark registration in the European Union

A single application to the EUIPO protects the trademark in all EU member states; this registration can also be used for Amazon Germany.

UK trademark registration

Application with the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO); since an EU registration no longer covers the United Kingdom after Brexit, it is filed separately.

Canada trademark registration

Application with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO); for brands selling on Amazon Canada or exporting to Canada.

Trademark registration and Amazon Brand Registry

Amazon Brand Registry is opened with the application or registration number from the trademark office of the marketplace where you sell: USPTO for Amazon US, EUIPO or a German registration for Amazon Germany, and UK IPO for Amazon UK. For this reason, the application is planned around the marketplace where the product will be sold; if several markets are targeted, a single filing through the Madrid Protocol may also be considered.
